Optics is a branch of science that studies the behavior and properties of lights. Optics can also describe the behavior of visible, ultraviolet and infrared light. Other forms of optics can include electromagnetic waves like x-rays, microwaves, and radio waves.

Optics is comprised of many different ideas and related to different functions. For example, refraction and reflection can have a relationship with optics. Refraction occurs when light travels through an area of space that changes the index of reaction. Reflection occurs when the direction of wave front changes at the surface between two different media. Optics can also be in association with lens. Lens are classified by the curvature of two surfaces. Lenses are the glass parts related to telescopes, microscopes and kaleidoscopes.

Laser cutting cuts material similar to plasma cutting. It its used for industrial applications and uses a high power laser. Optics is not defined by one specific industry, but can be used in many different applications.
