Process of Creating Optical Lenses

Manufacturing Process of Optical Lenses

Below is a list of steps used to produce lenses

Order Preparation

Order is sent to manufacture

Lens is calculated individually

Data for production is saved

Two lenses from inventory are pulled

conveyor belts used to transport to next step

Blocking

Ensure lens are in correct position

Mounted securely for machine tools

Protective lacquer is applied

“welded” by a metal allow to form, polish, and engrave

Forming

Design is applied

usually automated with a CNC machine

direct polishing

Roughness is removed

shape and optical power finalized

De-Blocking and Cleaning

Blocking materiel is melted

Clearing occurs with brush washing

Cleaning agents and high purity watery is used

Lens cleaned with air

Tinting

Plastic tins can be any color

dyes are similar to textiles

glasses are dipped

Glass tints limits colors

dyes are metal oxides

applied in layers

 Coating

Hard protective layer

about two microns thick

makes lenses scratch resistant

Antireflective coatis applied

can be 9 layers makes lenses smooth

Resistant to dirt and water

Quality Assurance

Inspected before delivery

visual inspection for dust, damage, and right reflection color

Machines used to check refractive power, axis, cylinder, thickness, design, diameter

Lens aligned by electron focimeter

 Despatch

Printing of delivery note,

Automated packaging,

Insertion of warranty card

Dispatched to a location

Glazing

Insertion of lenses into frames

Must be done by professional

Precision is required

Amateur can ruin lenses, impair visual quality, and cause aberrations
